Omaha Hi-Low: General Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical approach in just about all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at the start, following a few hands you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi-low provides an overwhelming array of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous players battling for the high, along with a few trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
