Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many players get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical notion in almost all poker games.
A low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complicated at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the base nuances of the game simply enough. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing collection of betting choices and seeing that you have several players battling for the high, as well as several battling for the low. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
