Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked playing different card games when he was young. He found himself getting really competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he played many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and concentrate even more on poker.

The actual advancement in his game began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would regularly compete against each other. Howard had access into some of the greatest minds in chess. Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest women players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played cash games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
