Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many players often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical notion in nearly all poker games.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated initially, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting collection of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, along with a few shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha Hi-Lo.
